ABSTRACT

Online shopping has revolutionized our daily lives in the modern era. We can purchase needed goods on mobile shopping applications (apps) anytime and anywhere without leaving home. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have become increasingly dependent on various mobile shopping activities. However, the visual design of the shopping app interface often affects the user's interactive experience and the efficiency of browsing product information. In addition, gender differences are also worth being considered in the shopping interface design process. To achieve the goal, the research conducted a user study (N=40) of a 2× 2 x 2 mixed factorial design (i.e., information layout x display mode x gender difference). Each participant performed four tasks during the experiment. The authors measured the task completion time, collected the subjective responses from the SUS and the 7-point Likert scale questionnaire, and interviewed participants. The results revealed that: (1) females perform faster in lighter mode when searching for information location, while males perform faster in darker mode. (2) The information layout affects the user's visual search performance and subjective evaluation;females prefer the list style, but men prefer the matrix style. (3) Participants (both males and females) perceived matrix style as more popular than list style in dark mode;however, the result was reversed in light mode. The findings generated from the research can serve as a good reference for the development of user experience in the user interface design of mobile shopping apps. © 2013 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 has a major impact on people's daily shopping. Geographers need to consider the characteristics of the commercial layout in order to be resilient when the pandemic comes. This chapter compares the Chinese people's daily shopping distances in three stages. Stage 1 is 1 year before the strict lockdown (January 23, 2019 to January 23, 2020). On January 23, 2020 the city of Wuhan temporarily closed its airport and railway station. Six departments, including China's National Health Commission, issued an announcement on the Prevention of COVID-19 by Strict Transport Control. Stage 2 is the period of strict pandemic control (January 23 to April 27, 2020). Stage 3 is the period of regular pandemic control (April 27, 2020 to February 18, 2021, the last day of this survey). During Stage 3, the lockdown has only been implemented in high-risk areas in China. We divide the study areas into four zones: old city, new city, suburban and rural areas. Three types of daily shopping were investigated: buying fresh foods, household supplies, and medical supplies. This study uses the change in shopping distance of sampled interviewees to measure the resilience of retail layout in response to the pandemic. The conclusions are that the retail layout in China has the resilience to deal with the pandemic in general and that resilience varies in the different zones. The resilience of retail layout in response to the pandemic can also be measured by more dimensions, which is what we need to explore in the future. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

ABSTRACT

Due to the results of the COVID-19 epidemic on health, the positive effect of social distancing has been highlighted. Nevertheless, the effect of housing layouts on resident's perceived behavioral control over social distancing in shared open spaces have been rarely investigated in the context of pandemic. Filling this gap, the current study examines the moderating effect of perceived behavioral control on the relationship between social isolation and psychological distress. Data from 1349 women residing in 9 gated communities during the Iranian national lockdown were collected. The results of ANOVA indicate that there is a significant difference between various housing layouts in terms of residents' perceived behavioral control. Respondent in courtyard blocks layout reported higher perceived behavioral control over social distancing than in linear and freestanding blocks. The findings of structural equation modeling identified perceived behavioral control as a buffer against the effect of social isolation on psychological distress.

ABSTRACT

The twin buildings located in Viale delle Province 198 used to be the administrative headquarters of the National Institute of Social Protection (INPS) in Rome, then left vacant since the acquisition by the real estate fund, Investire SGR. It was squatted in 2012 by hundreds of families in a condition of housing vulnerability with the political and logistical support of the Blocchi Precari Metropolitani, that are part of the local Housing Rights Movements. Given its layout and central location, Viale delle Province 198 has become a hub of autonomous infrastructures of the welfare and contentious politics from below, with a strong focus on healthcare. This vocation has been highlighted by the Covid-19 pandemic, whose unforeseen challenges compounded pre-existing patterns of exclusion. On the one hand, the activists, inhabitants and local social workers have engaged to consolidate the social innovations that have been devised since the onset of the pandemic. On the other hand, they and their solidarity networks are coalescing to cope with the repercussion of the eviction procedure that started during the summer 2022, and that would cause the dissolution of the autonomous infrastructures they have generated.

ABSTRACT

Challenged by the effects of organisational flexibility and high corporate real estate costs, organisations are increasingly seeking flexibility and operational efficiency in their office spaces. To date, the literature relating to flexible office spaces has focused mainly on their physical characteristics. The full effects of such spaces on human reactions and the corporate culture of organisations are less understood. The objective of this paper is to examine the influence of introducing activity-based working (ABW) on existing organisational culture. It was addressed from the perspective of the management of large corporate organisations. A mixed-method research that included a qualitative approach followed by a quantitative approach was adopted. The first stage included semistructured interviews with 19 large organisations who had introduced flexible layouts. The second stage involved a questionnaire survey of 32 organisations which had experienced office layout changes. Findings identify that the nature of workplace designs has a considerable impact on the corporate culture of an organisation and can be used to leverage and change its culture. Workplace designs directly influence culture by supporting the systems, symbols, engagement/motivation and behaviours of the organisation and employees. However, some differences between the perceptions of public and private organisations were identified. In conclusion, office layouts are artefacts that can either support, or change, the existing organisational culture. Therefore, the critical achievement of workspace design is to integrate the cultures, values and behaviours of organisations to meet their ultimate goals.

ABSTRACT

Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, concerts are gradually being held online. Beyond live-streaming, it has recently become popular to utilize various realistic video technologies to add entertainment value and immersion to online concerts. We conducted a multi-view layout design study in a virtual reality environment with a head-mounted display to help users effectively explore and immerse themselves in multiple videos from various angles. Based on an analysis of an existing user interface for multi-view navigation and the characteristics of virtual reality, we proposed four layouts, i.e., 1) an evenly divided space, 2) an evenly divided designated space, 3) a widget type, and 4) an avatar type. We implemented a prototype by applying Korean pop concerts, where multi-view videos are the most actively utilized, and then conducted a user study to evaluate the usability and preferences of the proposed layouts. The results show that it is adequate to arrange the multi-view videos within a 60° to 110° space and on the left and right side of the main view, which is a range that the users can comfortably access. In addition, when placing multiple videos in a designated space, it is helpful to use visual effects or simple avatars to avoid visual burden being placed on the users. © 2022 ACM.

ABSTRACT

We have modeled the transmission of coronavirus 2019 in the isolation room of a patient suffering from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London. An adaptive mesh computational fluid dynamics model was used for simulation of three-dimensional spatial distribution of SARS-CoV-2 in the room. The modeling set-up is based on data collected in the room during the patient stay. Many numerical experiments have been carried out to provide an optimal design layout of the overall isolation room. Our focus has been on (1) the location of the air extractor and filtration rates, (2) the bed location of the patient, and (3) consideration of the health and safety of the staff working in the area. © 2023 Author(s).

ABSTRACT

This visual-essay is based in the domestic space during Covid-19 lockdown in NSW, Australia, from 24 March to 25 May 2020. It is an auto-ethnographic documentation of how one family managed living with ADHD under lockdown. Assumptions and stereotypes about ADHD are broken down and challenged in the supporting narrative. These explain the complexity of living with ADHD and illustrate how very small, seemingly insignificant acts can have a large impact on managing the compounding effect an unprecedented situation like lockdown, on issues prevalent in those with ADHD such as anxiety, organisation, and lack of control over in personal circumstances. These are framed within the larger context of preceding catastrophic 2019/2020 summer bushfires that occurred in Australia, to provide the reader with insights into the emotional states in which many people in Australia entered lockdown. The author invites the reader to pay attention to the details of each of these images, to observe the visual communication cues that appear on the whiteboards, such handwriting by different people, doodles, illustrations, colour coding, and the layout that evolved over time, as personal agency within the family members developed.

ABSTRACT

Pathogenic bacteria pose a great threat to global public health from environmental and public health perspectives, especially regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide. As a result, the increased risk of pathogenic bioaerosol exposure imposes a considerable health burden and raises specific concerns about the layout and location of vaccine manufacturers. This study proposed a grid computing method based on the CALPUFF modelling system and population-based environmental risks to reduce bioaerosol-related potential risks. We previously used the CALPUFF model to quantify the diffusion level, the spatial distribution of emissions, and potential environmental risks of bioaerosol leakage in Gansu province's Zhongmu Lanzhou biopharmaceutical plant from July 24, 2019, to August 20, 2019. By combining it with publicly available test data, the credibility was confirmed. Based on our previous research, the CALPUFF model application combined with the environmental population-based environmental risks in two scenarios: the layout and site selection, was explored by using the leakage accident of Zhongmu Lanzhou biopharmaceutical plant of Gansu province as a case study. Our results showed that the site selection method of scenario 2 coupled with the buffer area was more reasonable than scenario 1, and the final layout site selection point of scenario 2 was grid 157 as the optimal layout point. The simulation results demonstrated agreement with the actual survey. Our findings could assist global bioaerosol manufacturers in developing appropriate layout and site selection strategies to reduce bioaerosol-related potential environmental risks.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic, with its global impact on every scale of life, has caused a change in all the habits of people regarding daily life, and this change has also been directly reflected in the human-space interaction. The bidirectional relationship between human and space has evolved by being influenced by each other during the pandemic process. Within the scope of this study, which aims to determine the predicted change in the spatial preferences and usage habits of the users in the shopping malls due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which causes changes in the space and the usage habits of the users from micro scale to macro scale, analyzes were made with the research methodology consisting of three stages (i. space syntax, ii. survey, iii. comparison) and the results were evaluated. According to the results obtained from the case study, it was determined that the COVID-19 pandemic deeply changed people's spatial perception, preferences and usage habits in shopping malls and circulation layout also plays a role on it. To summarize, while personal preferences were at the forefront in places to be preferred for shopping before the pandemic, the characteristics of the place gained importance after the pandemic. ABSTRACT

The prolonged global coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19) has affected all aspects of life, economy, and society, especially small and medium businesses. To meet this challenge, many companies are transforming models and reorganizing production and operations to adapt to this situation. These companies have adopted a variety of philosophies to remove non-value-Added activities from their production processes to maintain efficiency, flexibility, and profitability. In the context of Industry 4.0, solutions are ready to combine automation technology together with the Lean manufacturing approach. Furthermore, when it comes to efficient use of resources (financial, labor, materials, machine, and equipment), Industry 4.0 should be applied to Lean Processes. Thus, this article shows how to apply the Lean method to optimize plant design to cut waste, improve the efficiency of input resources, increase labor productivity by reducing labor costs, waiting (man-To-man;man-machine), reduced movement, and redundancy of operations in the workflow. Especially, the paper uses the SLP (Systematic Layout Planning) method to arrange the areas, material flow, and supply chain in the factory, Lean application to visualize the factory and combines IoT (Internet of Things). Moreover, using automation and Lean Production theory will support much for factory construction in the future, minimizing irrationalities when applied in practice. The result of the paper will mention a case study on the design and simulation of a face mask plant © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, there are more needs for remote patient care especially in rehabilitation requiring direct contact. However, traditional Chinese rehabilitation technologies, such as gua sha, often need to be implemented by well-trained professionals. To automate and professionalize gua sha, it is necessary to record the nursing and rehabilitation process and reproduce the process in developing smart gua sha equipment. This paper proposes a new signal processing and sensor fusion method for developing a piece of smart gua sha equipment. A novel stabilized numerical integration method based on information fusion and detrended fluctuation analysis (SNIF-DFA) is performed to obtain the velocity and displacement information during gua sha operation. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the traditional numerical integration method with respect to information accuracy and realizes accurate position calculations. This is of great significance in developing robots or automated machines that reproduce the nursing and rehabilitation operations of medical professionals. IEEE

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Vaccination is one of the most successful public health interventions for the prevention of COVID-19. Toward the end of April 2021, UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund), alongside other organizations, were promoting the hashtag #VaccinesWork. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to analyze the #VaccinesWork hashtag on Twitter in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, analyzing the main messages shared and the organizations involved. METHODS: The data set used in this study consists of 11,085 tweets containing the #VaccinesWork hashtag from the 29th to the 30th of April 2021. The data set includes tweets that may not have the hashtag but were replies or mentions in those tweets. The data were retrieved using NodeXL, and the network graph was laid out using the Harel-Koren fast multiscale layout algorithm. RESULTS: The study found that organizations such as the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and Gavi were the key opinion leaders and had a big influence on the spread of information among users. Furthermore, the most shared URLs belonged to academic journals with a high impact factor. Provaccination users had other vaccination-promoting hashtags in common, not only in the COVID-19 scenario. CONCLUSIONS: This study investigated the discussions surrounding the #VaccinesWork hashtag. Social media networks containing conspiracy theories tend to contain dubious accounts leading the discussions and are often linked to unverified information. This kind of analysis can be useful to detect the optimal moment for launching health campaigns on Twitter.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has struck the global industry. Airflow in an enclosed space is one of the main factors in the spread of this virus. When combined with personal protective equipment, proper air ventilation can reduce the spread of this airborne virus. Potential sources of contaminant accumulation are stagnant locations of air in a plant. It is, therefore, necessary to first identify these hot spots. It will then allow proper airflow by avoiding stagnant points by moving machines, equipment, and people working in the areas. This type of CFD study will set the benchmark for future plant machine layout standards in this pandemic background. The work discussed here is a case study on a small pharmaceutical in Paraguay. The CFD results showed detailed information on flow patterns and velocity profiles in the analyzed production environment. This helped industry management to reopen work areas and keep their operators safe. © 2021 Begell House Inc.. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

Entering the post-epidemic era, the travel demand for shared cars is increasing day by day. In the normalized epidemic prevention and control, epidemic prevention in shared cars needs to be designed systematically. This paper analyzes the existing risk of COVID-19 propagation based on two perspectives: scenario and data, and discusses the existing means of protection. Then based on the existing measures, the design suggestions are given from two aspects: scenario-based and data-based. Based on the scenario, the layout design and disinfection is implemented in regard to various ways that COVID-19 is transmitted;based on data, travel data integration should be promoted to achieve macro-structural dynamic adjustment and integrated governance from the overall transportation system. In the context of the industries, the shared car industry should response to new trend immediately and implement innovative ideas to obtain a service that is better suited for individuals in the post-epidemic era. In the end, several major functions of design in terms of developing the urban transportation system are discussed. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

Vaccination procedures, which are the most effective way to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, have started worldwide. Since hospitals and health centers are used as vaccination centers, collecting people in one place can lead to the spread of other diseases. Therefore, the use of temporary vaccination clinics is encouraged for mass vaccination. In this study, the number of temporary clinics that need to be placed in candidate locations and the regions they serve are investigated. While the weights of the candidate places are determined by a single-valued neutrosophic fuzzy multi criteria decision-making method, the temporary vaccination clinics are assigned to the candidate locations via savings heuristic. The proposed neutrosophic fuzzy MCDM integrated saving heuristic methodology is applied on an illustrative example. The results are thought to be helpful in future multi-facility layout models.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, the development of China’s e-commerce live broadcasting industry has been developing rapidly. With the outbreak of COVID-19, Internet users have opened the shopping mode of live broadcast by e-commerce. As a more accurate and rapid way of content dissemination, e-commerce live broadcasting has built a new mode of communication between brands and consumers, narrowed the distance between consumers and goods during online shopping, and greatly improved the sales conversion rate. At this time, the research on the generation mechanism of consumer behavioral intention in e-commerce live broadcasting platform is very key. This paper introduces three dimensions: aesthetic appeal, functional layout and financial security, and constructs a research model of online service scenario on consumer behavioral intention in the context of e-commerce live broadcast. The empirical results show that the three dimensions of aesthetic appeal, functional layout and financial security have a positive impact on consumers’ behavior intention, and have a significant positive impact on consumers’ trust. Consumer trust has a significant positive impact on consumers’ behavior intention. This study takes the multi-dimensional e-commerce live broadcast e-servicescape as the starting point, provides more reliable basis for the study of consumer behavior will, and expands the application scope of e-servicescape. The research results have certain enlightenment to help the e-commerce live broadcasting platform accurately grasp the needs of users in the process of use and realize the conversion from platform use to purchase. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
